RSS Feeds

Even though an RSS Aggregator was talked a lot about in the first few weeks of this assignment, I was still struggling to grasp the concept.

So I search around the internet to find out exactly what it was and how it could be applied and I found two examples staring right at me!! The first was on the desktop of my computer – a news feed from NBC. The second happened when I logged into my Blogger account – the ‘reading list’. Both of these are examples of RSS feeds.

RSS feeds are basically a list of the updated headlines to the websites that you have subscribed to (Wikipedia 2009, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rss). They save so much time by directly feeding you updates – instead of manually checking each website for changes. I have found it a lifesaver in this course!!

RSS feeds would be great if you had a class website that all students had subscribed to. It would mean that they can easily keep informed and up to date as they would know of any recent updates made to the site. Yet another amazing, time saving technology!

  1. Hi Kelly

RSS Agreggators certainly do save a lot of time and make it much easier to keep on top of what is going on. For me, completing this assignment would have been a lot harder if I didn't establish one in the first couple of weeks. Not having an RSS feed to monitor our classmates posts would also mean that some people's blogs would get priviledged more than others and comments may be more sporadic as I personally would try to respond to as many of their posts as possible in the one instance so I didn't have to check back all the time to see what they had updated.

I think your idea of having an RSS feed for our subjects would be a great idea. I would definately feel more on top of what I was doing.

  2. In the beginning, I was using Edublog and not having RSS stopped me from seeing what everyone was up to. When I switched to Blogger as well as stumbling on RSS at the same time- made blogging easier.Having to read and post comments on other blogs was great.
I was so alone with my other blog that I understand the concept of connectivism!
I still dont know how I manage to acquire RSS I stumbled on it accedentally.
Better late than never they say...

  3. Hi Donna

I thought I had placed a comment on this one but it has disappeared?? I have done that a couple of times. Definetely some user errors happening on my end!
RSS is a great way to stay linked to the information and people we find important. I agree with everything you have said.
Also agree with Maryann that it helps me to feel connected with everyone else too.
    cheers
