Moodle and Blackboard - The Way of the Future

Until starting uni two years ago, I had no idea what Moodle or Blackboard even were. Now I can’t imagine doing uni with out them. Moodle and Blackboard are internet course management systems. They allow all parts of a university or school (eg. students, teachers, tutors and administration) to interact with each other.

Moodle and Blackboard put everything in one place – which I find very convenient. All resources are there, as well as links to additional information, discussion boards, notices and reminders.

Although it is primarily used in universities, there is now a growing trend to use it in schools. I just completed my prac in a school in Gympie which used Blackboard. Each subject the student was enrolled in was available online. It provided assessment items, homework, links for additional research, the weekly newsletter and anything else that traditionally was printed on paper and given to the student – now the students don’t have the excuse ‘But I don’t have that Miss’ or ‘I lost it’! After that experience, I think that all schools should have some sort of internet based course management system – it was user friendly, time efficient and allowed the students to take charge of their own learning.

Although it took me a while to get used to this new way of doing things, I now love it. It is a great way to keep your students informed and regularly communicating – it is now no big deal if a student is away as all of the resources are on the course Moodle or Blackboard site.

  1. Hi! Kelly

I agree that Moodle and Blackboard are very useful and easy tool for e-learning. Do you prefer Blackboard or Moodle? As a student point of view, I think Moodle is easier as the actual context of learning is the right in the middle so we can find them quickly. On the other hand, Black Board need to click on link to go to actual materials. Anyway both of them are very good tools for sure.

    Kind Regards

  2. Hi Makiko

Having used both systems, I think that Moodle is definately more user friendly. I also prefer the layout and find it easier to find materials.

    Thanks for your input

  3. Hi Kelly,
I still remember my first months at uni. Having to find my way through blackboard it was so hard at first then it became a second nature. I prefer the lay out of blackboard where you get to read all your learning materials and other relevant items by subjects or maybe because moodle is new to me. Moodle in the other hand
has more feature where you can see who is online.
Another good thing about moodle is the 'forum' I haven't use Moodle when you have more subjects.
Both has its effectiveness I guess.

    Cheers

  4. Hello ladies
I am enjoying using Moodle at present, but find it hard to link to the forum, as I forget where I was up to. I would like to see Moodle link to the form that is being asked of us. Both, I'm sure have their benfits, and over time we will just feel as comfortable using Moodle as Blackboard.
    Till next time

Moodle has taken the place of Blackboard...They closed blackboard because it was not functioning correctly and had to many issues....Moodle has now taken over. Webfuse is still with us. So maybe you should be talking about Webfuse and Moodle....

    thank you for sharing
